Exploring Brussels with open eyes: Year 9 pupils lend a hand

Making sandwiches, decorating paper bags, preparing hot tea and coffee: for the Year 9 pupils, Tuesday 27 October began with a joint task. Together with Serve the City, they wanted to support people living on the streets in Brussels city centre.

Everyone pitched in right from the start of the preparations at school. The sandwiches were packed into bags they had designed themselves, whilst hygiene kits were put together and thermos flasks filled. The pupils then set off for the city in three groups.

Approaching people you’ve never met before can sometimes take a bit of courage. The pupils plucked up the courage and handed out the food, drinks and hygiene items they’d brought with them. It was particularly lovely to see how attentively and naturally the pupils interacted with their fellow human beings. They took their time, listened and learnt that helping others also means giving them your attention.

We would like to thank Serve the City for their collaboration, as well as the parents and teachers who accompanied and supported the initiative.
