On December 19, 2019, the children in the Bunte Zeit rounded off the year with the annual Christmas party.
In the run-up to the event, a number of activities throughout the month of December helped to heighten their anticipation of the festive season. Each afternoon the kids listened to short Christmas stories, added a light to our window candle decorations, and opened their self-decorated advent socks filled with little treats. We also had an afternoon baking and decorating Christmas cookies, not to forget the exciting trip to the Treasure Trove Bookstore and Pottery Café in Tervuren.
The Christmas party itself kicked off with all the children singing their favourite Christmas songs and listening to a traditional Christmas story. Then there was a special visit from Father Christmas himself, accompanied by his two helpers. The children listened attentively as he read from his little book, praising them for the things they do well every day, and asking them to support each other in improving some things that they could do better. Father Christmas then invited some children forward so that he could distribute a few gifts to the group. Then, after singing together again, he left the children to open the gifts and enjoy the rest of the party.
The afternoon continued with a Christmas buffet offering fruit juice and hot chocolate, Christmas cookies, meatballs, cheese and other Christmas-themed snacks. There were a number of fun quizzes to entertain everyone, including name the Christmas song and guess the Christmas smell! The children were delighted to open the gifts and discover new indoor and outdoor games to enjoy during Bunte Zeit in 2020, including Monopoly, super-sized Chess, and catch balls with multi-coloured tails. As they left, the children were able to take home their individual pottery pieces that they had painted a week earlier, as well as a little gift of a self-made snowflake containing a surprise photo of each child with some of their friends.
